Get Coding: Learn HTML, CSS & Javascript to Create a Password – Mission 2

We will be using the Get Coding book by the Young Rewired State, a worldwide community of digital-makers aged 18 and under.

The Get Coding! book will not only teach you how to code, but also show you how fun and exciting it can be.

Coding is one of the most important skills young people can learn and there’s never been a better time to master it.

Together with the Get Coding! book and access to the www.getcodingkids.com website, we will learn how to code using three (3) essential programming languages:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Javascript

HTML, CSS & Javascript are three of the most important programming languages in the world. They are used by web developers to build the websites and web-based apps and games you use everyday.

In the workshops, following the book, you will learn real-life coding skills you can use to do all kinds of programming.

Get Coding! Workshops

There are six (6) exciting missions in Get Coding!. Our mission is to work through as a group each of the missions and learn how to code HTML, CSS & Javascript.

Mission 2: Create a Password

In Mission 2 you are going to learn how to code in a new programming language called JavaScript. JavaScript allows you to build web pages that are interactive, which means they respond to the user. In this mission you are first going to learn how to use hyperlinks to connect two web pages together to create a simple website.

Then you are going to learn how to create JavaScript programs that will run in your web browser. In the final Do It Yourself Task you will use your JavaScript skills to create a program that checks a user’s password. If the user enters the correct password, they will be taken to the Monk Diamond web page. If they get the password wrong, they will get an alert telling them that access has been denied.

Code Skills: What will we learn in Mission 2

Creating a Hyperlink

  • Creating a hyperlink in your web page that will connect the user to another website.

Linking between web pages

  • Create two (2) web pages and use hyperlinks to connect them and make a simple website.

Using Variables and Operators

  • Code simple JavaScript programs using operators to change the value of a variable.

Coding IF Statements

  • Code a program that performs an action if the condition of the variable is true.

Coding ELSE Statements

  • Use an IF statement and an ELSE statement to code a program that does different things depending on the condition of the variable.

Functions and Arguments

  • Group a series of JavaScript statements together to form a function. Use the return statement to create an argument.

Making HTML Code run JavaScript

  • Use the onclick attribute to make a HTML element run a piece of JavaScript when it’s clicked.

Workshop Details: 8 Week 55 Minute Workshops, 3pm – 355pm
