What is HTML?

When it comes to building web pages, the three most common computer languages used are HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

HTML stands for HyperText Mark Up Language.

Pretty much all web pages are created using HTML code, and it helps to create the structure of a web page.

HTML elements are represented by tags which look like angular brackets like these: < > (opening tag) </> (closing tag).

Instructions placed in between the tags are the things you see displayed on web pages such as content, layout, text and images etc.

  • HyperText is the method by which you move around on the web โ€” by clicking on special text called hyperlinks which bring you to the next page. The fact that it is hyper just means it is not linear โ€” i.e. you can go to any place on the Internet whenever you want by clicking on links โ€” there is no set order to do things in.
  • Markup is what HTML tags do to the text inside them. They mark it as a certain type of text (italicised text, for example).
  • HTML is a Language, as it has code-words and syntax like any other language.

What does a basic HTML document (web page) look like?

<!DOCTYPE html>
